Start with one behaviour
A useful programme does more than hand out discounts. It encourages a specific behaviour: one extra visit each month, more traffic during quiet hours, or discovery of a new offer. Define that outcome before choosing stamps, points or rewards.
For high-frequency venues, a simple stamp mechanic is often the clearest. Customers understand it immediately and staff can explain it in one sentence.
Choose a reward people want
Aim for high perceived value and a sustainable real cost. A signature item, an upgrade or a small experience can feel more distinctive than a blanket discount.
- Make the first reward feel attainable
- Keep the rule consistent everywhere
- Track the real cost of every reward
Remove friction from every visit
A card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet removes the need for another app or a paper card. Customers join through a QR code and keep the pass on their phone. At checkout, one scan records the visit.
A smooth launch also depends on staff: one short explanation, visible counter material and a process that does not slow service.
Measure return, not sign-ups alone
Track joins, visit frequency, earned rewards and redeemed rewards. Compare trends over time and across locations. The objective is to improve repeat behaviour, rather than collect a large but inactive member list.
